Well, we've reached the 1st February, the start of Spring and I got all fired up and decided to do some sowing for Pea Shoots and planting of Potatoes in 2 litre pots. Most of the potatoes had sprouted in their storage bags and were those I'd grown last year but I also planted a Lady Christl and a Maris Bard I got from the Hampshire Potato Day, hopefully for some nice early Potatoes. I potted on 2 pots of Apple Mint and a Polyanthus that I'd brought into the polytunnel when I saw them start to make some leaves a couple of weeks ago. I like to put a few mint leaves in with my Salad Leaves and get a nice minty surprise. We've had a lot of rain lately so my paths are a bit flooded. The easterly winds are also bringing in a lot of cold air and lots of frosts which will hopefully kill the bad bugs. Most of the things I'm doing at the allotment are in the Polytunnel because of the cold and wet. I disturbed a Peacock Butterfly when I was sorting out some pots under the staging I ordered some seeds from Groseeds They came quickly, are well wrapped with re-sealable packets and the Peas and Beans come with a paperclip to close the bag after you've taken some out. They also sent a free packet of seed and for every order you help someone have clean water for a week. One of my Mayan Gold Potatoes has gone to mush, so I only have 3 left now. The last 2 days have been lovely with lots of sunshine and the wind isn't so cold so I managed to get a lot of weeding and clearing done outside. I haven't been this far ahead for a couple of years, but now both my hips seem okay
I pruned a Sedum and 2 Blackcurrant bushes and pulled up the dead stems of Nasturtiums, Squash, Tomatoes and Flowers in one of my raised beds. The bag contains some seaweed I didn't manage to put anywhere yet.
