It has now become an annual tradition on the last weekend of January to go to the Hampshire Potato Day in Whitchurch, Hampshire. I take some other plotholders to fill the car up and we enjoy buying up our Seed Potatoes nice and early in the season. click on 'read more' button on right There are 129 varieties listed in the Catalogue, which is a mine of information and cheap at only 60p. The Seed Potatoes are provided by Charlton Park Garden Centre, Wantage and are 17p a tuber or £1.50 for 10 and these can be mixed varieties. There are plastic bags, sticky labels and pencils provided so there's no excuse to get them mixed up. Here's my 'cache' and the varieties are:-
I also bought some Peas, they were £1 for a half pint. I got Kelvedon Wonder and Sugar Bon a Sugar Snap type. Both are dwarf growers and I've soaked about 40 of each, some to sow in small containers for Pea Sprouts and the rest to be sown in guttering, using my spent hotbed compost, to easily transplant in one fell swoop at a later date. Here are my little beauties marked up with their initials and sitting in their egg boxes. Already, overnight the chits are growing.
The intention is to keep 4 each of the Lady Christl and Charlotte for growing in August for Christmas Potatoes. I'm not sure how to keep them dormant till then, anyone have any experience of this?
